Mineola's Leaf Season Has a December Deadline, and Next Fall the Rules Change

On streets like Mineola Road West, the trees don't finish dropping on schedule. A big maple can still be letting go in late November, after the first rake-out has been vacuumed away and the lawn looks clear for a week. That is why the calendar matters more here than in most of Mississauga. This fall, south Mississauga's leaf season comes down to two closing dates in the same stretch: the City's last vacuum pass, which ends December 4, and Peel's last weekly yard-waste pickup, the week of December 7.

It is also the last fall that works this way. Starting October 1, 2027, the City of Mississauga takes over curbside collection from the Region of Peel, and fall yard-waste pickup goes from weekly to every two weeks. Any leaf that falls after early December this year runs into both of those changes.

Where Mineola Sits on the 2026 Map

The City runs its Vacuum Leaf Collection Program in three color-coded zones, and the boundaries changed this year. According to Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko's 2026 program notice, the yellow zone's southern edge moved from Eglinton Avenue to Burnhamthorpe Road, and the blue zone's southern edge moved from Dundas Street to the QEW. The green zone still runs from the QEW to Lake Ontario, which takes in all of Mineola. The notice says the change was made to match service to when leaves typically fall, and that some residents will find their dates are different this year.

The City's 2026 route data lists segments of Mineola Road West, Mineola Road East and Mineola Gardens as Green, Ward 1, with two service windows each. Being in the green zone doesn't put every street on the vacuum route, though. The program only covers qualifying streets, meaning streets more than 35 years old with many large mature trees. The City's leaf pickup page links to a route map where you can check your own street. Eligible households also get a postcard with their dates, timed to arrive about two weeks before their zone's first pickup.

The Calendar From Here

Mineola's first vacuum window opened Monday, November 9, and runs through Friday. Here is how the rest of the season lines up for the green zone:

  1. Through Friday, November 13: first green-zone vacuum window, which began November 9.
  2. Sunday, November 15: a short break from the rake. The Port Credit Christmas Market runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Port Credit Royal Canadian Legion, 35 Front Street North.
  3. Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 4: the second and final green-zone vacuum window.
  4. Week of December 7: the Region of Peel's last curbside yard-waste collection of the season.
  5. After that: drop-off at a Peel Community Recycling Centre, for a fee.

There are about two and a half weeks between the end of the first window and the start of the second. On a heavily treed lot, that gap covers much of the late drop. The second window then picks up whatever has come down since, and Peel's final bag week a few days later catches what falls after the vacuum trucks are gone.

All of these dates can move. The councillor's notice says the program depends on the weather, and rain, early snow or freezing temperatures will affect the schedule. New this year, the City offers leaf collection email updates on schedule changes and weather delays. That is the easiest way to know whether November 30 still means November 30.

Setting Out a Pile the Truck Will Take

The vacuum program takes loose leaves only, and placement matters. Rake leaves to the boulevard a day or two before your window opens. The City's rules for a clean pickup:

  • Pile leaves neatly at the edge of the boulevard or in a ditch, never on the road.
  • Keep piles away from curbside storm drains.
  • Don't mix in wood, bricks or brush.
  • Don't set bins or bags on top of a leaf pile.
  • Move parked cars and sports equipment off the road on collection days.

The road rule is there for drainage. The councillor's notice says leaves raked onto the road can block catch basins and affect drainage when it rains. That matters most in the second window, which comes later in the season when rain and early snow are more likely.

Peel's Bags Are a Separate System

Peel's yard-waste pickup has nothing to do with the vacuum routes. It follows each household's regular collection day, which Peel publishes in an address-specific collection calendar. The councillor's notice describes it as the backup for the vacuum program: anyone who misses their pickup dates, or still has leaves after their zone's program ends, can put them out in paper yard-waste bags or open reusable containers for Peel.

Peel's rules differ from the City's. Leaves go in paper bags or reusable containers clearly labeled "yard waste." Plastic bags and grass clippings are not accepted, and everything has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day. Peel classifies leaves as yard waste, and its leaves guidance says the green organics cart is not an acceptable container for them. Leaves aren't on Peel's list of acceptable green-bin organics either.

Under the current service, Peel collects yard waste weekly in Mississauga from October to mid-December. On a street with a long, late drop, that weekly pickup in December does a lot of the work.

After the Week of December 7

Once Peel's curbside season ends, leaves can still go to a Community Recycling Centre. Peel accepts residential yard waste at every CRC year-round, for a fee. The two closest to south Mississauga are Battleford CRC at 2255 Battleford Road and Fewster CRC at 1126 Fewster Drive. Both are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and both close on statutory and provincial holidays.

Peel's posted fee schedule sets a $7 minimum for chargeable loads, plus 14.5 cents per kilogram above that minimum. Residential yard waste is on the list of items that carry a fee. The centres take debit or credit only, and you need proof of Peel residency at the gate. Compared with free curbside pickup through the week of December 7, a car trip and a minimum charge is a real reason to get the last of the leaves out before the season closes.

Fall 2027 Runs on a Different Clock

The City's April 1, 2026 announcement sets out what changes next year. Starting October 1, 2027, the City of Mississauga takes over local waste collection from the Region of Peel, and some residents' collection days may change along with how often yard waste is picked up. Here is how the two setups compare:

Current Peel service City service from Oct. 1, 2027
Residential collection days Monday to Thursday Monday to Friday
Spring yard waste Weekly, mid-March to June Every two weeks, mid-March to mid-December
Summer yard waste Every two weeks, July to September Every two weeks
Fall yard waste Weekly, October to mid-December Every two weeks

The Community Recycling Centres stay with the Region of Peel after the switch. Recycling stays with Circular Materials, which took it over on January 1, 2026.

The fall change matters most in Mineola. Under biweekly pickup, the bag backup that follows each vacuum window will come half as often during the same October-to-December stretch when the big trees do most of their dropping. The first fall under the City's contracts will be 2027, which makes the weekly bag pickup through the week of December 7, 2026 the last of its kind.

A clear boulevard by early December is something buyers notice on Mineola's tree-lined streets, and it is one of the small details that shapes how a home shows into winter.
